The United States is open to holding talks with Iranian officials on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Tuesday.
However, Rubio said no meeting had been scheduled yet.
Speaking to NBC’s Today programme, Rubio said Washington was prepared to engage with Iran if such a meeting had the potential to produce a positive outcome.
He said the central objective would be to ensure that Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon.
US President Donald Trump has also expressed willingness to meet Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during the UN General Assembly, although no formal arrangement for such a meeting has been announced.
Pezeshkian is in New York for the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, where world leaders are gathering amid continuing tensions between Washington and Tehran.
The UN has welcomed efforts to revive dialogue between the two countries.
A UN spokesperson said on Monday that any renewed engagement between the United States and Iran could help bring an end to the ongoing conflict.
For now, however, a direct US-Iran meeting during the General Assembly remains under discussion rather than a confirmed event.
