Police have arrested two students in Rangpur city for allegedly attempting to rape a seventh-grade schoolgirl and later blackmailing her by recording and sharing an intimate video, officials said.
The accused, Salman, 21, and Swapno, 20, were arrested from Senpara and Kamarpur areas of the city on Tuesday afternoon.
According to police, the two accused are students. Investigators said Salman allegedly took the minor girl to Swapno’s house on September 2, following a relationship with her, and attempted to sexually assault her.
Police said he allegedly recorded a video of the girl after forcibly removing her clothes and later made another attempt to sexually assault her.
The accused subsequently allegedly sent the video to the girl’s mother through Instagram and demanded money, according to the complaint.
The girl’s father filed a complaint with Rangpur Metropolitan Kotwali Police Station on Tuesday. Police subsequently arrested the two accused from their respective residences.
The accused were later produced before the Rangpur Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court. Their lawyers sought bail, but the court rejected the petitions and ordered that they be sent to jail.
Kotwali Police Station OC AKM Nazmul Kader confirmed the arrests and said the victim gave a statement before the court under Section 22 of the Children Act.
The allegations are subject to investigation and judicial proceedings.
