A depression over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression, with winds of up to 60 kilometres per hour likely to affect Bangladesh’s coastal areas, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
The weather office issued the forecast around midnight on Tuesday.
Meteorologist Khandkar Hafizur Rahman said wind speeds near the centre of the deep depression were reaching up to 60 kmph.
The system may move ashore through the coastal area between India’s Andhra Pradesh and Odisha around midnight on September 23, he said.
As a precaution, local cautionary signal No. 3 has been kept hoisted at all maritime ports.
All fishing boats and trawlers have been advised to remain close to the coast and operate with caution.
Under the influence of the deep depression, winds of up to 60 kmph may sweep across the coastal areas of Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar.
Cautionary signal No. 1 has also been issued for river ports in the affected areas.
