The United States launched a large-scale military operation against Iran while funeral proceedings were underway for former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with explosions reported in several parts of the country.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the latest wave of strikes hit 80 targets across Iran.
According to CENTCOM, the attacks targeted Iran’s air defence systems, command-and-control networks, coastal radar installations and anti-ship missile capabilities.
The command also said it struck more than 60 small boats belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in and around the Strait of Hormuz to reduce Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping along the international maritime trade route.
CENTCOM said the operation was launched in response to what it described as Iranian attacks on three commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday.
According to Al Jazeera, Iran has neither confirmed nor denied carrying out the alleged attacks on the vessels.
Iran’s state-run Press TV reported fresh explosions on Qeshm Island, while additional blasts were also reported on Kharg Island near the Strait of Hormuz.
CENTCOM said the strikes on Iranian infrastructure are intended to inflict maximum damage in response to the alleged attacks on commercial ships. It described the incidents as dangerous and a clear violation of the ceasefire, calling such actions unacceptable.
