A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is moving west-northwestward, prompting authorities to raise local warning signal No. 3 at the country’s four seaports.
Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra ports have been asked to hoist the warning signal as the system could bring gusty winds to coastal areas.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department issued the warning in a special bulletin on Wednesday (Sept 23).
According to the bulletin, the deep depression, which had been over the west-central Bay and adjoining northwest Bay, has moved westward and is now located over the northwest Bay and adjoining west-central Bay.
At 6am Wednesday, the system was about 900km southwest of Chattogram port, 880km southwest of Cox’s Bazar, 720km southwest of Mongla and 750km southwest of Payra.
The deep depression is expected to move further west-northwestward and may cross the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts of India on Wednesday night.
Under its influence, gusty winds may sweep across the seaports, the North Bay and coastal areas of Bangladesh.
Winds within 48km of the system’s centre are reaching up to 50kmph, with gusts or squalls increasing to 60kmph. The sea remains rough near the system’s centre.
Fishing boats and trawlers operating in the North Bay have been advised to remain close to the coast and navigate with caution until further notice.
