Biman Bangladesh Airlines is set to sign an agreement to purchase 11 additional aircraft from US aerospace giant Boeing as part of efforts to modernise its fleet and expand its long-haul operational capability.
The agreement is scheduled to be signed in New York today (Wednesday, September 23), according to Biman sources.
The signing ceremony will take place at 4:15pm local time (2:15am Bangladesh time on Thursday) on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly session.
Biman Board of Directors Chairman Rumi Akhtar Hossain will sign the agreement in the presence of Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir.
Following the ceremony, Boeing Global President Dr Brendan Nelson is scheduled to pay a courtesy call on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Earlier, on April 30, Biman signed a $3.7 billion agreement with Boeing covering eight 787-10 Dreamliners, two 787-9s and four 737-8 aircraft.
With the addition of the 11 aircraft under Wednesday’s agreement, Biman’s total planned aircraft procurement from Boeing will rise to 25.
However, details of the models, prices, financing arrangements and delivery schedules for the 11 newly contracted aircraft have yet to be officially disclosed.
