Students of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) are observing a “complete shutdown” for the second consecutive day, demanding the reinstatement of removed Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Abu Sadat Mohammad Sayem.
The shutdown has effectively halted academic and administrative activities at the university.
Students have been demonstrating on campus since Wednesday morning, with the teachers’ association and organisations representing university officials and employees expressing solidarity with the movement.
The students have vowed to continue the shutdown until Sayem is reinstated as vice-chancellor.
As part of the protest, students are also collecting signatures in support of their demand. Some were seen spending time playing cricket, football and taking part in other activities on campus.
“We have only one demand — the reinstatement of Sayem Sir as vice-chancellor. The shutdown will continue until our demand is met,” the students said.
Meanwhile, a meeting between leaders of the CUET Teachers’ Association and Chattogram Divisional Commissioner and District Commissioner is scheduled to be held at the Chattogram Circuit House after 10am.
The meeting is expected to discuss ways to resolve the ongoing deadlock and restore normal activities at the university.
Prof Dr Abu Sadat Mohammad Sayem took charge as CUET vice-chancellor on July 27. He was removed from the post and a new vice-chancellor was appointed on Monday, 56 days after he assumed office.
Students began protesting on Monday night demanding his reinstatement and launched the “complete shutdown” programme on Tuesday. The continuation of the shutdown for a second day has left CUET’s academic and administrative activities largely paralysed.
