A hearing on the submission of the investigation report in the crimes against humanity case against Major (retd) Md Muzaffar Hossain, a key accused in the murder case of former president Ziaur Rahman, is scheduled at the International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Wednesday.
The three-member tribunal, headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, is expected to hold the hearing. The other members are Judges Md Manzurul Bashid and Nur Mohammad Shahriar Kabir.
Muzaffar Hossain was brought before the tribunal from military custody under tight security on Wednesday.
The tribunal showed him arrested in the crimes against humanity case on July 23 and allowed investigators to question him for two days. The investigation agency subsequently questioned him as ordered by the tribunal.
According to prosecution sources, investigators questioned Muzaffar about alleged crimes against humanity during the July 2024 uprising and his possible links to the killing of Ziaur Rahman. During questioning in September, prosecutor Tanvir Hassan Zoha said Muzaffar claimed that Lt Col (retd) Matiur Rahman shot Ziaur Rahman during the 1981 assassination. He also reportedly said then army chief HM Ershad had travelled to Chattogram two days before the killing. These are claims attributed to Muzaffar and have not been independently established.
The ongoing case before the tribunal concerns alleged crimes against humanity committed in Feni during the July 2024 uprising. Retired Lt Gen Masud Uddin Chowdhury is also an accused in the case.
Prosecutors said their investigation into Muzaffar’s alleged involvement began based on information obtained while questioning Masud Uddin Chowdhury, including alleged communications between the two during the July uprising.
Muzaffar, who had remained at large for nearly 45 years, was arrested from a residence in Banani on July 15 and handed over to military police the following day. He is also facing proceedings under military law in connection with the Ziaur Rahman murder case.
The tribunal is expected to decide on the next legal steps after the investigation report is submitted.
