Eleven children died with measles-like symptoms across Bangladesh in the 24 hours to 8am on Wednesday, taking the country’s combined confirmed and suspected measles-related death toll to 1,076 since March 15.
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reported the figures in its daily measles outbreak bulletin on Wednesday.
The country also recorded 1,270 new cases involving measles or measles-like symptoms during the same 24-hour period.
The latest fatalities add to the prolonged measles outbreak that has affected communities across Bangladesh since March. The DGHS has been publishing daily figures on suspected and confirmed cases, hospital admissions, recoveries and deaths.
The health authorities classify deaths separately as laboratory-confirmed measles deaths and suspected measles-related deaths. The combined death toll therefore includes both categories.
DGHS data show that the outbreak has continued to generate a large number of new suspected cases and hospital admissions, although the exact scale of measles infection is difficult to establish because not all patients are laboratory-tested.
The latest figures underscore the continuing burden of the outbreak on the country’s health system.
