DHAKA: Teachers must possess a strong sense of responsibility, ethics, integrity and values alongside higher degrees, research experience and academic competence, said University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Professor Dr Mamun Ahmed.
“Teachers are regarded as role models by students and members of society. Therefore, a teacher’s conduct, values and sense of responsibility have a profound influence on the development of students’ personalities and their future lives,” he said.
He made the remarks while addressing the closing ceremony of a 10-day ‘Master Trainer’ training programme held at BRAC CDM in Rajendrapur, Gazipur, last night.
“Teachers do not merely deliver lessons; they also play an important role in shaping students’ thinking, behaviour, ethics and values,” Dr Mamun said.
He stressed the need to develop students’ morality, values and sense of social responsibility alongside academic education at universities.
Referring to a recent incident in Cumilla, Professor Mamun Ahmed said such incidents had created an opportunity for universities to rethink students’ ethics and values.
“We need to consider why students are becoming involved in such situations and how they can be made more responsible,” he said.
Announcing plans to bring around 5,000 teachers from public and private universities under training, Professor Mamun Ahmed said master trainers were being developed for the purpose.
The trained teachers will train other teachers at their respective universities and serve as ‘ambassadors’ of various UGC programmes.
Director of the HEAT project Professor Dr Asaduzzaman, Dean of the University Teachers’ Training Academy Professor Dr Layla Noor Islam, HEAT project consultants Professor Dr Mohammad Moninur Rashid and Professor Dr Md Abdus Salam, Professor Dr Muhammad Mezbah-ul-Islam of the Department of Information Science and Library Management at Dhaka University, British Council Higher Education Project Senior Education Consultant Professor Dr Mark O’Hara, British Council Deputy Director Maria Rahman and other concerned individuals were present at the programme.
