US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T Christensen on Wednesday welcomed Dhaka’s decision to procure 11 additional Boeing aircraft for Biman Bangladesh Airlines, as the two sides are set to sign an agreement in New York.
“Congratulations to Boeing and Biman on the agreement to purchase 11 more of the world’s best commercial planes,” he said in a statement.
Officials said the agreement is scheduled to be signed at 4:15pm Wednesday in New York, or 2:15am Thursday in Bangladesh.
The US envoy described the deal as “another win-win for the US-Bangladesh relationship” and said he looked forward to witnessing the signing ceremony, which will coincide with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visit to New York to attend the UN General Assembly session.
The additional 11 aircraft will be procured on top of the 14 Boeing planes covered by Biman’s earlier $3.7 billion agreement with the US aircraft manufacturer, signed on April 30.
The latest deal will bring Biman’s planned Boeing acquisitions to 25 aircraft.
Details of the models, prices, financing terms and delivery schedule for the additional aircraft have yet to be disclosed publicly.
Biman is also considering a separate proposal to purchase 10 Airbus aircraft.
