Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is interested in opening an office or establishing a focal point in Dhaka, citing Bangladesh’s large number of Facebook users, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed has said.
She made the remarks at a press briefing at Bangladesh’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York on September 22, following discussions with Meta during the 81st UN General Assembly.
According to Shama, Bangladesh is among the world’s largest markets for Facebook, and Meta is interested in working more closely with the country.
The company will also review when and how it could establish an office in Dhaka.
The discussions also covered cooperation in expanding e-commerce and online businesses, as well as working with educational institutions in Bangladesh.
Digital harassment and online safety were also discussed, with Meta expressing interest in working with the Bangladesh government and relevant agencies to address the issue.
Bangladesh’s Cyber Security Act was also part of the discussions.
Shama said Meta was interested in working closely with Bangladesh’s team in the future and would assess the next steps regarding an office in Dhaka.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
