Police have arrested a 17-year-old boy in connection with the death of a construction worker who was run over by a private car in Dhaka’s Baridhara Diplomatic Zone.
The teenager was arrested from a house on Road 12 in Gulshan on Wednesday, Gulshan Police Station Officer-in-Charge Zahed Noor said.
The incident occurred at around 5:30pm on Tuesday on Road 1 near the German Embassy.
A speeding black SUV lost control, mounted the footpath and ran over 24-year-old construction worker Mehedi Hasan, who was resting there. He died after being taken to Kurmitola General Hospital.
CCTV footage reportedly showed the teenager emerging from the driver’s side of the vehicle after it struck Mehedi and crashed into a streetlight pole.
Local residents had detained him and handed him over to police shortly after the accident.
He was initially released into his uncle’s custody after questioning and was not named in the case filed over the incident.
Instead, a man identified as Akash Marok, 44, was named as the driver and has reportedly been absconding.
Police later arrested the teenager after analysing CCTV footage and finding evidence of his involvement.
The investigation is continuing and legal action will be taken against the person found responsible, police said.
