Canada has announced an additional $100 million in aid for Palestinians, with Prime Minister Mark Carney saying the support is aimed at helping preserve the prospects for a two-state solution.
Carney made the announcement on Tuesday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
Of the new funding, $80 million will be provided for humanitarian assistance, while the remainder will support security and other development programmes.
The package also includes additional funding for a multi-year programme providing police training in the West Bank.
Carney said Palestinians in Gaza were facing “massive humanitarian suffering”, while Israelis were confronting what he described as “existential threats” from Hamas, Iran and its allies.
Since the Israel-Hamas war began in October 2023, Canada has pledged more than $600 million in assistance for Palestinian civilians, according to the report.
Meanwhile, documents tabled in the Canadian Parliament this week have detailed damage to dozens of Canadian-funded aid projects caused by Israeli military forces and settlers.
Earlier this month, Canada, along with France and the United Kingdom, announced a ban on imports from Israeli settlements in the West Bank. The countries cited settler violence among the reasons for the decision.
Carney also opposed Israel’s planned E1 settlement project on Tuesday. Critics have warned that the project could divide the West Bank.
