Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to deliver his maiden address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York today, presenting Bangladesh’s priorities and positions on a range of national, regional and global issues.
In his speech, the prime minister is expected to highlight Bangladesh’s renewed democratic journey, rule of law and accountability, as well as the country’s aspirations for development.
He is also expected to address global peace and security, climate change, sustainable development, economic cooperation, youth and women’s empowerment, education and healthcare.
The Rohingya crisis is expected to receive particular attention. Bangladesh has been seeking stronger international support for the safe, voluntary and dignified repatriation of Rohingyas to Myanmar and a sustainable solution to the prolonged crisis.
Tarique has already discussed the issue with UN officials during his New York visit.
The prime minister is also expected to speak about the fair and responsible use of modern technology and the need for reform of the multilateral system.
Climate-related concerns, including climate finance, adaptation, technology transfer, loss and damage and climate justice, are among the issues Bangladesh has been highlighting at the UN this year.
Tarique is expected to deliver the speech in Bangla, marking his first appearance before the UN General Assembly as Bangladesh’s prime minister.
His address comes at a significant moment for Bangladesh, as Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman is presiding over the 81st session of the General Assembly.
On the sidelines of the UNGA, Tarique has held meetings with international leaders and officials, including the World Bank president, Bhutanese prime minister, Maldivian vice-president, Turkish president and UN officials, discussing bilateral relations, development cooperation and the Rohingya crisis.
The 81st UNGA is being held under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.”
The high-level General Debate began on September 22 and continues through the week.
