Five people, including the prime accused, have been arrested in connection with the alleged murder of a housewife in Gangachara, Rangpur, over a dowry demand.

The Special Response Battalion (SRB)-13 arrested them in separate raids in Panchagarh and Lalmonirhat on Tuesday night.

The arrestees are housewife Sukhi Moni’s husband and prime accused, Shamim Mia, along with Saju Mia, Afroza Begum, Sathi Begum and Aminul Gatia.

Sathi and Aminul were arrested in Boda upazila of Panchagarh, while Shamim, Saju and Afroza were detained in Kaliganj of Lalmonirhat, SRB-13 Additional Superintendent of Police and Senior Assistant Director (Media) Biplab Kumar Goswami confirmed on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the case statement and the victim’s family, Sukhi Moni married Shamim in 2024. Her family alleged that she had been subjected to physical and mental abuse after her in-laws demanded Tk 200,000 in dowry. Several local mediations were reportedly held over the dispute.

Family members said Sukhi Moni was allegedly assaulted on September 11. They were informed of her death at around 1:30am the following night. Relatives later noticed dark marks around her neck, they alleged.

Following the incident, her mother, Rowshanara Begum, filed a murder case with Gangachara Model Police Station on September 12.

SRB-13 subsequently launched an intelligence operation to locate the accused. Acting on specific information, the battalion first arrested two suspects and later detained three others based on information obtained during the initial arrests.
