Bangladesh secured their first hockey victory at the ongoing Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan, defeating Sri Lanka 5-1 in the men’s competition in Gifu on Thursday.
Both Bangladesh’s men’s and women’s hockey teams are participating in the Games.
The victory came as a relief for Bangladesh, who had suffered a defeat to Sri Lanka in the AHF Cup just a few months ago. The result had raised concerns ahead of their Asian Games meeting.
Bangladesh took the lead in the first quarter through Amirul Islam before extending their advantage in the second quarter. Amirul scored twice, while Ashraful Islam also found the net. Mahbub Hossain added another goal.
Bangladesh dominated the match and earned more than 15 penalty corners, keeping the Sri Lankan defence under sustained pressure.
Sri Lanka pulled one goal back through Kushal, but the effort proved insufficient as Bangladesh comfortably secured the win.
