The Bangladesh Coast Guard has seized 13,507 Indian sarees and 1,466 Punjabis worth around Tk7.04 crore from a fishing boat and a covered van in Barguna’s Patharghata.
Five suspected smugglers were also detained during the operation conducted early Wednesday.
Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon disclosed the information on Thursday.
He said Coast Guard Station Patharghata launched the operation around 2am based on a tip-off in an area near the Bishkhali River in Kakchira Union.
During the operation, Coast Guard personnel searched a suspicious fishing boat and a covered van and recovered the Indian clothing items, which were allegedly smuggled into the country without paying customs duties.
The seized goods and vehicles, along with the five detainees, were handed over to Patharghata Police Station for further legal action.
Sabbir Alam Sujon said the Coast Guard would continue such operations to prevent smuggling.
