The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has declared the main road from Paltan intersection through Gulistan Zero Point to North South Road free of hawkers.
DSCC Administrator Bir Muktijoddha Md Abdus Salam made the announcement during an inspection of the area on Thursday morning.
He said hawkers would not be allowed to set up stalls on the main road under any circumstances and that legal action would be taken immediately against anyone violating the restriction.
“We have held several rounds of discussions with representatives of different hawker organisations. They have also voluntarily pledged to leave these main roads,” Salam said.
He said the initiative was aimed at restoring free movement for pedestrians and reducing public suffering caused by encroachment on roads and footpaths.
The administrator said a limited number of registered hawkers would be allowed to operate only at designated locations on the eastern side footpath beside Ramna Bhaban, while leaving sufficient space for pedestrian movement.
He warned that hawkers would not be allowed to operate outside the designated locations, hours, numbers or registration requirements.
“No one will be given any concession if the rules are violated,” he said.
Regarding demands from hawkers to reduce registration fees, Salam said the matter had already been brought to the attention of the relevant ministry. The DSCC will take further decisions in line with the ministry’s instructions.
During the inspection, the administrator spent more than an hour overseeing efforts to clear the main road and footpaths from Paltan intersection to Gulistan Zero Point.
DSCC Chief Executive Officer Md Khayrul Rahman, Chief Waste Management Officer Air Commodore Md Mahbubur Rahman Talukder, other senior officials and representatives of hawker organisations were present during the inspection.
