The Election Commission is considering holding local government elections in January after students complete their annual examinations, Election Commissioner Anwarul Islam Sarker said on Thursday.
Speaking to journalists at the Election Commission building, he said elections would not be held in November and December because of the annual examinations.
“Local government elections will begin in January after the examinations. We hope so,” he said.
Sarker said it would be difficult to arrange elections during public examinations as members of the law enforcement agencies are deployed for security duties during the exams.
Regarding preparations for the local government polls, he said the Election Commission had asked the government to provide a list of local government institutions that are ready to hold elections.
He also said there had been no exchange of letters with the government over the local government elections and that the election schedule had been changed based on practical considerations.
