Around 60 maunds of hilsa were caught in a fishing trawler in the Bay of Bengal off Hatiya in Noakhali, bringing cheers to local fishermen and fish traders.
The trawler returned to Chairman Ghat on Thursday morning (September 24) after spending six days at sea. The fish were later auctioned in three phases at Saiful Fish Arat until noon and sold for around Tk 2 million.
Fisherman Abdur Rahim Majhi of Hatiya had gone fishing with a crew of 18. After returning with the large catch, the hilsa were put up for auction at Saiful Fish Arat, where traders competed to buy them.
The unusually large catch generated excitement among fishermen, wholesalers and traders at the ghat.
Local fishermen said the catch had encouraged them, adding that continued abundance of hilsa in the sea could increase their earnings and have a positive impact on local fish markets.
Noakhali District Fisheries Officer Harun-or-Rashid said the availability of hilsa in the sea was currently good, allowing fishermen to get satisfactory catches.
“However, conservation of jatka (juvenile hilsa) and refraining from fishing during the government-imposed bans are necessary to increase hilsa production and ensure successful breeding,” he said.
