DHAKA: The government of Bangladesh has dismissed six police officers from service after they were convicted in cases before the International Crimes Tribunal, with sentences ranging from six years in prison to life imprisonment and the death penalty.
The Home Ministry’s Police-1 Branch issued six separate orders on Thursday, saying the dismissals were made in accordance with the tribunal verdicts. The orders were signed by Senior Secretary Manzur Morshed Chowdhury on behalf of the President.
The officers include Deputy Inspector General Syed Nurul Islam, Superintendent of Police Md Asaduzzaman, Additional Superintendents of Police Shah Alam Md Akhtarul Islam, Md Abdullahil Kafi and Shahidul Islam, and Assistant Superintendent of Police Mohammad Imrul.
Akhtarul Islam was sentenced to death by International Crimes Tribunal-1. Nurul Islam, Asaduzzaman, Abdullahil Kafi and Shahidul Islam were sentenced to life imprisonment by International Crimes Tribunal-2, while Imrul received a six-year prison sentence from Tribunal-1.
The dismissals were made effective retrospectively from the dates of the respective tribunal verdicts. Nurul Islam, Asaduzzaman, Abdullahil Kafi and Shahidul Islam were dismissed with effective from Feb. 5, while Akhtarul Islam and Imrul were dismissed with effective from Jan. 26.
The officers had previously held various senior positions in the Bangladesh Police, including assignments in Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Dhaka district, Dhaka Range, Rangpur Range and Armed Police Battalions.
The ministry said the dismissal orders were issued following the convictions handed down by the International Crimes Tribunal.
