UN imperfect but indispensable, says Dr Khalilur Rahman

 The United Nations is not perfect, but it is indispensable and it is difficult to imagine any alternative to it, UN General Assembly President Dr Khalilur Rahman has said.

He made the remarks in an official Facebook post on Friday, referring to his opening address at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.

Rahman said it was necessary to identify areas where the UN was falling short and reform issues and mechanisms that were no longer effective.

He also called for bringing more voices into decision-making discussions, ranging from industry leaders to young changemakers.

“Trust cannot be asked for; it has to be earned,” he said.

The General Assembly president said the current session offered an opportunity to build a UN that was pragmatic enough to deal with difficult realities, courageous enough to undertake reforms and open enough to include the stakeholders whose participation was necessary.

This, he said, would help make the UN fit for the future.
