Portugal began their UEFA Nations League campaign with a 1-0 victory over Wales, with Joao Felix scoring the only goal of the match in Lisbon.
The game was a frustrating one for Cristiano Ronaldo, who missed several chances and also had a goal ruled out for offside.
Portugal played their first match under new coach Jorge Jesus at the Estadio Jose Alvalade and dominated the early stages. Their pressure paid off in the 22nd minute.
Nuno Mendes won the ball in defence and advanced before finding Felix outside the penalty area. Felix controlled the pass and fired a low shot past Wales goalkeeper Danny Ward to put Portugal ahead.
Portugal continued to create chances, but they struggled to add to their lead. Ronaldo had an early opportunity, but his shot went wide. Vitinha and Felix also tried their luck before the break.
Ronaldo missed another good chance in the second half when he failed to convert a cross from Ruben Neves.
The Portugal captain later appeared to have doubled the lead after running onto a defence-splitting pass from Bruno Fernandes. However, a VAR review found him offside and the goal was disallowed.
Wales came close to an equaliser when Brennan Johnson’s chipped effort struck the post. From the rebound, Lewis Koumas’ shot was cleared off the goal line by Ruben Dias.
Both sides created further opportunities late in the match, but neither could find the net again.
Felix’s 22nd-minute strike ultimately proved enough as Portugal held on for a 1-0 win to open their Nations League campaign.
