The Bangladesh Police is set to establish a new specialized unit called the ‘Cyber Police Unit’ to combat cybercrime.
The unit will initially operate under the leadership of an Additional Inspector General of Police (Additional IGP), using the police force’s existing manpower and equipment. A full organizational structure will be developed later.
The decision was communicated in a letter sent to the Inspector General of Police on September 21 by the Police-3 Branch of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The letter, signed by Deputy Secretary Tanvir-Al-Nasif, granted in-principle approval for the formation of a specialized and independent Cyber Police Unit within the organizational structure of the Bangladesh Police.
According to the letter, the unit will initially begin operations using the police’s existing personnel and resources under the leadership of an Additional IGP. However, its full organizational structure, number of new posts, vehicles, and other logistical requirements have yet to be finalized.
The police have been instructed to submit a comprehensive proposal to the Ministry of Home Affairs within three working days, including the creation of necessary posts and the inclusion of vehicles in the Table of Organization and Equipment (TO&E).
