Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain has said technology and research are being prioritised to transform Chattogram into a modern, safe, environmentally friendly and smart city.
He stressed the need to use technological advances to improve traffic management, drainage and waterlogging control, waste management, public safety, citizen services and environmental management.
The mayor made the remarks as the chief guest at the opening of the two-day international technology conference ‘iConnect 2026’ at Premier University on Friday (September 25).
Shahadat Hossain, also chairman of the Premier University Board of Trustees, said innovations developed by universities, researchers and technology professionals should be applied to real-life urban problems rather than remaining confined to research institutions.
He emphasised the practical application of technological advances to improve civic services and urban management.
The mayor said an artificial intelligence-based smart traffic management initiative had been undertaken to address Chattogram’s longstanding traffic congestion.
Under the initiative, traffic signals at key intersections would be managed more efficiently by analysing vehicle pressure and traffic flow, he said.
A monitoring system would also be developed to detect traffic violations and illegal parking, he added.
The mayor highlighted the importance of integrating information technology, artificial intelligence and research into urban management.
Technology-driven solutions for traffic congestion, waterlogging, waste management, public safety and environmental protection could create new opportunities to improve civic services in Chattogram, he said.
The two-day iConnect 2026 conference is providing a platform for discussions and knowledge-sharing on various aspects of technology and research.
