Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan has announced a drive to build a dengue-free Dhaka North and reclaim occupied footpaths for public use, in line with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s call.
He made the announcement on Saturday (Sept 26) while inaugurating a special cleanliness week in Shewrapara aimed at destroying dengue mosquito larvae and preventing the spread of the disease.
“We have been working for the past three months to build a dengue-free Dhaka North,” the administrator said. Mobile courts have been conducting drives at homes, educational institutions, businesses and other establishments to detect dengue mosquito larvae and impose fines where larvae are found.
He said an open letter urging residents of Dhaka North to cooperate in building a dengue-free city had been prepared. The letter will be delivered to residents through local representatives and regional officials.
“Everyone must come forward with awareness and cooperation. It is not possible for the city corporation alone to build a dengue-free city,” Khan said, adding that the DNCC would work with residents to achieve the goal.
Expressing annoyance at posters and leaflets put up by businesses and political figures on metro rail pillars, the administrator said the DNCC would take all necessary measures to protect the city’s appearance.
He directed officials to remove all illegal posters from the metro rail pillars within the next 72 hours.
On occupied footpaths, Khan said they were public property and should remain accessible for safe pedestrian movement. He said businesses occupying footpaths had previously been served notices but had failed to take effective action.
“There will be no more notices. Wherever a footpath is occupied, mobile courts will conduct drives to remove the illegal occupation and restore the space for public use. There will be no concession in this regard,” he said.
After inaugurating the cleanliness week, the DNCC installed special bins under the metro rail to encourage shopkeepers to dispose of waste at designated locations. Residents and businesses were urged to use the bins.
A rally led by the administrator was held afterwards, followed by an eviction drive against illegal structures at Mirpur-10 Falpatti.
DNCC Chief Executive Officer Md Asaduzzaman chaired the inaugural programme. Chief Waste Management Officer Mohammad Humayun Kabir and local leaders were also present.
