RAJSHAHI: A student at the University of Rajshahi was bitten by a venomous snake while sleeping in his bed at Shahid Shamsuzzoha Hall early Sunday morning.

The incident occurred at around 5:30am in Room 138 of the residential hall. Following the incident, a nearly three-foot-long common krait, locally known as “Pati Kalach,” was rescued from the room.

The injured student, Nurnabi Islam, is a student of the Department of Information Science and Library Management from the 2022–23 academic session. He was taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for treatment.

Dr Shamim Ahmed, a physician at the hospital’s emergency department, confirmed that Nurnabi had been bitten by a venomous snake. He said the student was brought to the hospital early in the morning and medical examinations confirmed that he had been bitten by a common krait. He was given two doses of antivenom.

According to the doctor, Nurnabi’s condition has improved and he is currently out of danger.

Hall sources said Nurnabi was sleeping in his room when the snake crawled onto his bed and bit him on the leg. After realizing what had happened, he informed his classmates, who took him to the university’s medical centre in an ambulance.

Following the incident, members of Swan, a university-based volunteer organisation working on wildlife and environmental issues, rescued the nearly three-foot-long snake from the room.

Sajjad Sheikh, organisational secretary of Swan, said they rushed to the room after receiving the information at around 5:30am and successfully rescued the krait.

He said keeping rooms clean and organised could help reduce the presence of such snakes. According to him, kraits may enter beds in search of warmth and can bite when they come into contact with people.
