Bangladesh repaid $698.92 million in foreign loans during the first two months of the current fiscal year, more than twice the $294.56 million it received in foreign assistance, according to the Economic Relations Division (ERD).
Of the total debt servicing, $516.04 million went towards principal repayment and $182.88 million towards interest, according to an ERD report released on Sunday.
The figures cover July-August of fiscal year 2026-27.
Foreign assistance disbursements declined sharply from the same period a year earlier. Bangladesh received $750 million in foreign loans and grants during July-August of FY2025-26.
The increased debt-servicing pressure came as previously contracted loans reached maturity, while development activities slowed and the disbursement of foreign assistance declined, the ERD data showed.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh secured commitments for $240.39 million in foreign assistance during the first two months of FY27, slightly lower than the $243.81 million committed during the same period of FY26.
