Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen has called for expanding and strengthening multifaceted cooperation between Bangladesh and China, particularly in trade, investment, agriculture, education, culture and connectivity.

He made the call while addressing a programme organised by the Bangladesh-China Friendship Association at a hotel in Dhaka on Sunday.

Yao Wen said Bangladesh and China are geographically and politically close countries and their relations are rooted in historic ties.

He said there is considerable scope for expanding cooperation between China’s Yunnan province and Bangladesh in transport, agriculture, trade, investment, culture, tourism and education.

Greater cooperation in these areas would help strengthen people-to-people contacts between the two countries and create an important foundation for implementing the Bangladesh-China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, he said.

The ambassador noted that various social and business organisations have played an important role for decades in promoting friendship and cooperation between Bangladesh and China.

He said visits by high-level delegations in recent years have given new momentum to bilateral cooperation.

Yao Wen said the Chinese Embassy would continue to serve as a bridge for promoting mutual development, connectivity and cooperation between the two countries.

“China will continue its firm cooperation with Bangladesh in various sectors and work shoulder to shoulder with the country to achieve shared prosperity,” he said.

The event was attended as chief guest by Zhao Junmin, a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Yunnan Provincial Committee.

Advocate Nazmul Haque Nannu, adviser to the BNP chairperson and president of the Bangladesh-China Friendship Association, chaired the programme.
