Bangladesh is discussing possible visits by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to Japan, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia in October and November, following his participation in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, officials said.

Dhaka is considering invitations from Japan and Saudi Arabia for separate bilateral visits, while Türkiye has invited the Prime Minister to attend the 31st UN Climate Change Conference, COP31, in Antalya from November 9 to 20.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir met Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on the sidelines of the UNGA in New York on September 25. They discussed the Prime Minister’s possible participation in COP31, as well as high-level visits, defence cooperation, renewable and green energy, and investment opportunities for Turkish companies in Bangladesh, according to Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry. Japan has invited Tarique Rahman to pay an official visit at a mutually convenient time, with Tokyo expressing interest in further strengthening bilateral relations.

According to a diplomatic source, preliminary discussions indicate that the Prime Minister could visit Japan in the final week of October, although no dates have been finalised.

In April, Tarique Rahman participated in the Asia Zero-Emission Community Plus Online Summit on Energy Resilience hosted by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. The summit focused on strengthening energy supply-chain resilience and cooperation among Asian countries. World Japan

Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud has also invited Tarique Rahman to visit Saudi Arabia to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral relations and exchange views on regional and international issues.

Saudi Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr Abdullah Zafer H bin Abiyah handed over the invitation letter to the Prime Minister during a meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office in the Secretariat on August 17. The invitation said the two countries should further strengthen cooperation in areas of mutual interest. The date and schedule of the visit are to be determined through diplomatic channels at a mutually convenient time. The Daily Star

Bangladesh is also holding discussions with India over a possible visit by the Prime Minister, although no schedule has been finalised. Indian media have reported that such a visit could take place in November or early December.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman held meetings with the heads of government or state of seven countries during his four working days in New York alongside his participation in the UNGA.

They included Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime, Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.

The possible three-country tour would come as Bangladesh seeks to expand high-level diplomatic and economic engagement with major partners in Asia and the Middle East.
