Russia has launched a renewed wave of attacks on Ukraine’s digital and telecommunications infrastructure, with a drone striking the headquarters of Kyivstar, the country’s largest mobile and internet service provider, in Kyiv.
Kyivstar confirmed the strike to local media on Sunday, September 27, saying no one was injured in the attack on its headquarters.
Russia’s Defence Ministry also said a key data centre operated by Vodafone Ukraine, the country’s second-largest mobile network provider, had been hit.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said two successive missile strikes hit a data centre in Kyiv on Sunday, injuring three civilians, including two children.
Ukraine’s Ministry of Digital Transformation said a series of attacks on infrastructure belonging to internet service providers over the past week had disrupted electricity and network services for about 100,000 households in Kyiv and surrounding areas.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Russia was deliberately targeting data centres to disrupt the transmission of advance warnings about incoming missile and drone attacks.
Writing on X, Sybiha said the attacks were aimed at interrupting the flow of potentially life-saving information during emergencies.
The latest strikes indicate an intensification of Russia’s efforts to disrupt Ukraine’s information technology and communications infrastructure alongside its attacks on military targets.
