Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has pledged Tk 50 lakh to help restore the Radda MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur, which was damaged in an attack, vandalism and looting last week.
Jamaat Ameer and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Dr Shafiqur Rahman announced the donation after visiting the damaged health centre in Mirpur-1 at around 4:30pm on Monday.
He said the party’s initial assistance would continue and that the Tk 50 lakh donation was only the beginning.
“If necessary, we will provide further assistance to ensure healthcare services for the people of this area,” Shafiqur said.
He expressed concern over the attack, vandalism and looting at the health facility and called for those responsible to be brought to justice, regardless of their identity.
Shafiqur also expressed concern over what he described as a deterioration in the country’s law and order situation.
He alleged that such a large-scale incident could not have taken place without the “shelter and patronage” of ruling party elements, and further alleged that “mob violence” was taking place across the country under such patronage.
The Jamaat chief called on the government to take immediate measures to prevent further acts of violence and ensure legal action against those involved in the Radda incident.
The Radda MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur-1 was attacked and vandalised late on September 25. Police have arrested several people in connection with the incident and recovered looted goods. A police investigation also found evidence of negligence by law enforcement personnel who were on duty during the incident.
The centre, which has provided primary healthcare, maternity care, family planning services and child vaccination to underprivileged residents of Mirpur for decades, has since resumed some services, including vaccination, despite the damage.
The visit was also attended by Jamaat central executive council member and Dhaka Metropolitan City secretary Dr Muhammad Rezaul Karim, central working committee member and metropolitan assistant secretary Mahfuzur Rahman, central Majlis-e-Shura member and metropolitan assistant secretary Dr Fakhruddin Manik, central Majlis-e-Shura member and metropolitan publicity and media secretary Ataur Rahman Sarker, and other party leaders.
