Container delivery halted at Chattogram Port after worker assault

Container deliveries from Chattogram Port were suspended on Monday after transport workers stopped operations following an alleged assault on a trailer workers’ association leader by port security personnel.

The incident occurred around 4pm at Gate No. 5 of the port over the collection of entry fees, according to workers.

Workers alleged that the official gate-pass fee of Tk 57 was being replaced by charges of Tk 80–100. When association treasurer Moktar Hossain protested against the additional charge, an altercation reportedly broke out with security personnel, followed by physical assault.

Following the incident, truck, prime mover and trailer drivers and workers stopped transporting containers through the port, bringing cargo delivery operations to a halt.

Chattogram Port Secretary Syed Refayet Hamim said the delivery of containers had been suspended due to an “unfortunate incident” and that authorities were holding talks with labour leaders to resolve the problem.

The suspension began around 4pm, with cargo and container movement remaining halted into the evening. Workers said they would resume operations after the dispute was resolved.
