Students of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) staged a protest march late Monday night, alleging that various groups had been putting pressure on, intimidating and threatening students, teachers, officers and employees involved in the movement.

The protesters demanded the reinstatement of Prof Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem as the university’s vice-chancellor.

At around 11pm, students from different residential halls gathered at Independence Square, chanting slogans in support of their demand.

Thousands of students reportedly joined the procession, which passed through major roads in the residential area before returning to Independence Square.

During the rally, students alleged that some quarters had threatened them and attempted to intimidate their family members.

They said such threats would not stop their movement.

The protests began after the government removed Prof Sayem from the VC post on September 21, only 56 days after he took charge, and appointed Prof Sheikh Shariful Alam of Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET) as the new CUET vice-chancellor.

Students launched a shutdown on September 22, boycotting classes and examinations.

CUET’s Teachers’ Association has also been observing a full work stoppage in solidarity with the students, leaving academic activities at the university suspended for a week.
