DHAKA: There is no shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in Bangladesh, said Prime Minister’s Information Adviser Zahed Ur Rahman. He warned that action would be taken against anyone who hoards LPG with the intention of creating public discontent.
He made the remarks on Tuesday (September 29) at a press briefing on the progress of various government activities at the conference room of the Press Information Department at the Secretariat.
The adviser said Bangladesh imported 157,760 metric tonnes of LPG in August, while 118,000 metric tonnes had been imported so far in September. According to data presented at the briefing, the country’s LPG supply and stock situation remains satisfactory.
He said LPG importers and operators had assured the Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources that there was no shortage of LPG in the domestic market. They gave the assurance at a recent meeting to review LPG imports, stocks, supply and market prices.
Noting that LPG prices were showing an upward trend in some areas despite adequate stocks, Zahed said the minister had warned stakeholders against hoarding the product with the intention of creating public discontent.
He said speculative trends were emerging in commodity markets worldwide, which could also be contributing to rising prices. “The government is monitoring the situation and taking necessary measures,” he said.
The prime minister’s information adviser also said the government had moved away from the “anarchic situation” of the past and that violence had decreased significantly compared with earlier.
He added that misinformation would be reduced considerably once the Cyber Security Act was enacted.
