BNP Standing Committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy has said his party will politically confront the Awami League, whose activities are currently banned, rather than engage in physical confrontation.

He made the remarks while speaking to reporters on Tuesday after paying tribute at the graves of former president Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia along with party leaders and activists.

Gayeshwar said the fall of the previous government on August 5, 2024, drove what he described as authoritarianism out of the country. He said some Awami League members had left the country, while alleging that some people who retained similar political characteristics remained active.

He claimed that attempts were being made in some places to create instability and disrupt the country’s democratic process, including incidents involving crude bombs and explosions in the early hours of the day.

Calling for public vigilance, Gayeshwar said BNP leaders and activists at all levels stood with the people and would not allow the democratic process to be disrupted.

He said ensuring public security was the responsibility of the administration and urged authorities to identify those involved in alleged clandestine activities and acts of sabotage and bring them to justice.

Gayeshwar also said Bangladesh had begun what he described as the restoration of Ziaur Rahman’s goals of multiparty democracy, independence and sovereignty.
