Chinese ambassador pays farewell call on opposition leader

Outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen paid a farewell courtesy call on Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition in Jatiya Sangsad Dr Shafiqur Rahman at his official residence on Minto Road in Dhaka on Tuesday.

The meeting, held at around 11:30am, discussed various issues of mutual interest between Bangladesh and China.

Both sides expressed hope that economic, political, commercial, diplomatic and friendly relations between the two countries would be further strengthened in the coming days.

They also expressed optimism that Bangladesh and China would work together to accelerate bilateral cooperation, development and progress.

On behalf of Jamaat-e-Islami, the Chinese ambassador was praised for his role in promoting communication and dialogue among political parties during the political transition following the July movement.

Jamaat leaders expressed their appreciation for Yao Wen’s role in creating an environment for communication and dialogue among different political parties amid Bangladesh’s changing political circumstances.

The meeting was attended by Chinese Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Dr Liu Yuyin, Cultural Counsellor Li Shaopeng, Attaché Liang Shuying and Political Affairs Attaché Wang Daowei.

Jamaat leaders present at the meeting included Nayeb-e-Ameer ATM Azharul Islam, Secretary General and former MP Mia Golam Parwar, Assistant Secretary General and MP Maulana Rafiqul Islam Khan, Assistant Secretary General and Central Publicity and Media Department Secretary Advocate Ehsanul Mahbub Zubayer, Central Executive Council member and MP Saiful Alam Khan Milon, Central Executive Council member and Dhaka South city unit Ameer Nurul Islam Bulbul, Central Executive Council member Md Mobarak Hossain, Central Executive Council member and Dhaka North city unit Secretary Dr Muhammad Rezaul Karim, Central Working Committee member Md Zahidur Rahman, and Ali Ahmad Mabrur, a member of the Opposition Leader’s Foreign Affairs Advisory Committee.

Yao Wen has been making a series of farewell calls on senior Bangladeshi political and government figures ahead of the end of his tenure. He also met Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on September 28, when the two sides discussed expanding trade, investment and development cooperation as well as issues of mutual interest, including the Rohingya crisis.
