Outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen paid a farewell call on Leader of the Opposition and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman at his official residence on Tuesday.

The two sides discussed bilateral relations and issues of mutual interest, according to a press release.

They expressed hope that Bangladesh-China relations in the economic, political, trade, diplomatic and other areas would be further strengthened in the coming days.

They also expressed optimism that the two countries would work together to accelerate bilateral cooperation, development and progress.

During the meeting, Jamaat leaders thanked Yao Wen for what they described as his positive role in Bangladesh’s political affairs.

They particularly appreciated his efforts to promote dialogue among different political parties, including Jamaat, following the political changes after the July 2024 mass uprising.

The meeting came a day after Yao Wen paid a farewell call on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

During that meeting, they discussed expanding trade, investment and development cooperation between Bangladesh and China, as well as other issues of mutual interest and the Rohingya crisis.

Chinese Deputy Chief of Mission Dr Liu Yuyin, Cultural Counsellor Li Shaopeng, Attaché Liang Shuying and Political Affairs Attaché Wang Daowei attended Tuesday’s meeting.

Among the Jamaat leaders present were Nayeb-e-Ameer ATM Azharul Islam, Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar and Assistant Secretary General Rafiqul Islam Khan.
