Police arrested three people and recovered a pistol, four rounds of ammunition and three bomb-like cocktails near the Rupsha Bridge in Khulna on Tuesday evening.

The arrests were made when the suspects allegedly tried to flee on a motorcycle after seeing police near the northern side of the bridge, said police.

The arrested were identified as Al Amin, 23, Rony Molla alias Kasai Rony, 28, and Smaran Jomaddar alias Sajal Jomaddar, 26.

Police also seized the motorcycle used by the trio.

According to police, a privately owned cement unloading yard is located at a riverside ghat near the northern side of the Rupsha Bridge. Its owner, Yunus Ali, had allegedly complained that people claiming to be members of the local “B-Company” and “Nur Azim Bahini” had been demanding extortion money from him and threatening him.

The unloading operation at the yard was suspended on Tuesday following the alleged threats, police said.

Acting on the information, a police team went to the area at around 6:50pm to verify the complaint. Police said they spotted three helmet- and mask-wearing men trying to flee on a motorcycle from an open area in front of Jalal Ahmed’s Tush-Kura Mill.

The men also had their faces covered with towels, police said. Officers chased and detained them before conducting a search that allegedly led to the recovery of the pistol, ammunition and bomb-like cocktails.

Officer-in-Charge of Labanchara Police Station Syed Mosharaf Hossain said the three arrested men have several cases against them.
