Myanmar has assured India that it will not allow its territory to be used for activities threatening India’s security interests, as the two neighbours agreed to deepen cooperation on border security and transnational crime.
The assurance came during a meeting between the home secretaries of India and Myanmar in New Delhi on Tuesday, where both sides reviewed the security situation along their shared border and reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace, stability and security in the frontier region.
According to an official statement, the two countries stressed the importance of preventing the misuse of their sovereign territories for activities that could undermine each other’s security.
The discussions also focused on strengthening collaboration to combat terrorism, insurgency, narcotics trafficking, arms smuggling, human trafficking, wildlife crime, cybercrime and other forms of organised cross-border crime.
To address these challenges, the two sides agreed to enhance intelligence sharing, improve operational coordination and expand capacity-building initiatives between their security agencies.
India and Myanmar also reaffirmed their commitment to expediting key connectivity projects, including the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project and the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway, both seen as vital for regional trade and connectivity.
The Indian delegation was led by Home Secretary Govind Mohan, while Myanmar was represented by Deputy Home Affairs Minister Major General Min Thu.
India reiterated that Myanmar remains a key partner under its Neighbourhood First, Act East, and Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions (MAHASAGAR) initiatives.
Concluding the meeting, both sides expressed satisfaction with the discussions and agreed to maintain close cooperation through existing bilateral mechanisms to address shared security and development challenges.
