The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) resumed an eviction drive in Mirpur-10 on Wednesday afternoon, a few hours after clashes between hawkers and law enforcement agencies during an earlier operation.
The second phase of the drive began at Mirpur-10 roundabout shortly after 2pm. Local sources said around 50 shops were removed during the operation. Police and members of the Special Rapid Battalion (SRB) were present at the scene.
Earlier at around 10:30am, the DNCC launched an eviction drive against roadside shops occupying footpaths in the Hope Market area of Mirpur-10.
During the operation, a fire broke out from an electrical wire on the west side of Baitul Quddus Jame Mosque while shops in front of Hope Market were being removed.
Following the incident, hawkers vandalised and set fire to several city corporation vehicles. A chase and counter-chase then broke out between the hawkers and law enforcement personnel.
The DNCC later resumed the eviction operation in the area despite the morning clashes.
