Reserved-seat lawmaker Ferdousi Ahmed Mishti has resigned from Parliament following the demolition and vandalism of the Radda MCH-FP Centre in Dhaka’s Mirpur.
Mishti submitted her resignation letter at Parliament on Thursday afternoon, according to reports.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman said the prime minister had instructed Mishti to resign from her reserved women’s seat.
The development came after allegations surfaced regarding Mishti’s alleged involvement in the attack, looting and demolition of the Radda MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur-1. Mishti has denied involvement in the incident, while authorities have said her alleged role was being investigated.
The centre, which had provided maternal and child healthcare, family planning and vaccination services for decades, was attacked and demolished in the early hours of September 25. Heavy machinery was used to dismantle the facility, while medicines, medical equipment and other items were reportedly looted. Police have arrested several people in connection with the incident.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed had earlier said that investigators were examining whether an MP was involved in the incident and that legal action would be taken against anyone found responsible.
Meanwhile, the Dhaka North unit of the BNP and several affiliated organisations reportedly dissolved multiple committees on Wednesday night, with a number of leaders also expelled.
