The resignation of BNP reserved-seat MP Ferdousi Ahmed Misti took effect on Thursday, Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed said.
He said Misti’s parliamentary seat became vacant immediately after she resigned.
The Speaker made the remarks at an emergency press conference at the tunnel of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Thursday afternoon.
He said, “Ferdousi Ahmed, MP for Women’s Seat-23 of the Bangladesh Parliament, came to my office today and submitted her resignation letter in writing. In accordance with the Constitution, her seat became vacant as soon as she resigned.
“We have sent it for publication in the gazette. As soon as the gazette is issued, we will immediately inform the Election Commission, and the resignation will be effective from today.”
Asked whether Misti had mentioned any reason for her resignation, the Speaker said MPs do not mention reasons when they resign under parliamentary rules.
Earlier, a notice issued by the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat said Women’s Seat-23 of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad became vacant from Thursday following Misti’s resignation, in accordance with Article 67(2) of the Constitution.
The Election Commission Secretariat has also been asked to take the necessary steps to fill the vacant seat.
