Two more die with measles symptoms

Two more people died with measles-like symptoms in Bangladesh in the past 24 hours, while 1,132 patients with similar symptoms were admitted to hospitals across the country, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

During the same period, measles was confirmed in 82 people through laboratory tests.

With the latest deaths, the number of people who have died with measles symptoms has reached 1,009 so far this year. Another 101 people have died after being confirmed to have measles, bringing the total number of deaths to 1,110.

In its bulletin issued on Thursday, the DGHS said one person died each in Chattogram and Sylhet divisions in the 24 hours from 8am Wednesday.

Dhaka division has recorded the highest number of deaths among those with measles symptoms, with 452 fatalities. Sylhet follows with 179 deaths, while Rajshahi has recorded 93, Mymensingh 80, Chattogram 86, Barishal 60, Khulna 44 and Rangpur 15.

Of the 1,132 patients who sought hospital care with measles symptoms in the past 24 hours, 1,077 were admitted.

Among the newly admitted patients, 365 were in Dhaka division, 242 in Chattogram, 120 in Sylhet, 116 in Barishal, 103 in Khulna, 78 in Mymensingh, 31 in Rajshahi and 22 in Rangpur.

Since March 15, a total of 192,863 people with measles symptoms have sought hospital care, of whom 170,877 were admitted. So far, 163,973 patients have recovered and returned home.

Laboratory tests have confirmed measles infection in 21,602 people so far.

However, not all patients who visit hospitals, or those who remain outside the healthcare system, are tested for measles. As a result, laboratory data alone cannot provide a complete picture of the actual spread of the disease.
