Eleven officials, including three teachers, of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) have been permanently expelled over the killing of university student Abu Sayed during the anti-discrimination student movement.

The university published the list of those expelled on Thursday (October 1). Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Shawkat Ali confirmed the matter.

The decision was reportedly taken at a four-hour meeting of the university’s Syndicate, the highest policy-making body, which continued until 8pm on Wednesday.

Speaking about the decision, the vice-chancellor said it was taken at the 123rd meeting of the university’s Syndicate.

The expelled teachers are former Associate Professor of Mathematics Mashiur Rahman, Associate Professor of Public Administration Asaduzzaman Mondal alias Asad, and Associate Professor of Political Science and former Proctor Shariful Islam.

The other expelled officials are Assistant Registrars Rafiul Hasan Russell and Hafizur Rahman, Office Assistant-cum-Computer Operator Mahabubar Rahman Babu, Section Officer Moniruzzaman Palash, MLSS Mohammad Nurunnabi Mondal, Security Guard Nur Alam Mia, MLSS AKM Amir Hossain, and contractual employee at the Proctor’s Office Anwar Parvez Apel.

The university authorities said the decision was taken after receiving the full verdict of the International Crimes Tribunal-2 in the Abu Sayed murder case. The tribunal had earlier sentenced the accused to different terms of rigorous and simple imprisonment.

A three-member judicial panel led by Tribunal-2 Chairman Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury delivered the verdict on April 9.

According to the vice-chancellor, the Syndicate took the disciplinary action after examining the full verdict.

Abu Sayed, an English Department student at Begum Rokeya University, was shot dead by police in Rangpur on July 16, 2024, during the quota reform movement.

His death sparked widespread outrage across the country and became one of the defining incidents of the movement, which later grew into a mass uprising that led to the fall of the government.
