The Muslim World League (MWL) has strongly condemned a Houthi attack on the Taibah electricity distribution station in Saudi Arabia’s holy city of Medina, which provides electricity services to the Prophet’s Mosque.

In a statement issued by its General Secretariat, MWL Secretary-General Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa denounced the attack and said targeting civilian infrastructure in Medina was a serious provocation to the sentiments of more than two billion Muslims.

The league said the attack violated the sanctity of Islamic holy sites and basic humanitarian principles.

It also expressed solidarity with Saudi Arabia and its measures to protect the holy sites and the lives of Muslims.

The statement came after Saudi authorities said a drone had struck the Taibah electricity distribution station in Medina. The station serves the Prophet’s Mosque, one of Islam’s holiest sites.

The Houthis have denied involvement in the attack, according to reports.

The MWL called for the protection of Islamic holy sites and prayed for the safety and security of Saudi Arabia, its leadership and its people.
