HABIGANJ: An indefinite transport strike in Habiganj has been suspended following protests over the detention of buses and alleged assaults on transport workers in Moulvibazar.

The decision was taken at a joint meeting of the Habiganj Motor Owners Group and the Transport Workers Unity Council on Thursday night. Following the decision, public transport services resumed normally on all roads in the district, including internal routes, from Friday morning.

Confirming the decision, Habiganj Motor Owners Group General Secretary Abu Moin Chowdhury Sohel said the strike was temporarily suspended after taking commuters’ suffering into consideration.

The motor owners’ group alleged that buses operating on the Habiganj–Moulvibazar–Sylhet route had been facing disruptions for a long time. It also alleged that transport workers had been assaulted and vehicles vandalized on several occasions.

According to the group, three buses from Habiganj were recently detained in Moulvibazar. Although similar disputes had previously been resolved through meetings, the buses were allegedly detained again and workers assaulted.

The transport owners and workers had called the indefinite strike from Thursday in protest and to demand a proper resolution of the issue. The strike has now been suspended temporarily.
