Measles kills four children, infects 1,242 in 24 hours

Four children died from measles and suspected measles across Bangladesh in the past 24 hours, while another 1,242 children were identified with the disease or its symptoms, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said Friday.

Of the four deaths reported during the period, one was confirmed as measles and three were suspected measles cases, according to a DGHS press release issued Friday afternoon.

Among the 1,242 newly identified cases, 21 were confirmed measles infections and 1,221 were suspected cases.

Since March 15, the number of suspected measles cases reported nationwide has reached 194,084, while 21,623 cases have been confirmed, the DGHS said.

During the same period, 172,021 patients were admitted to hospitals, of whom 166,933 have been discharged.

The country has recorded 1,114 measles-related deaths since March 15. Of these, 1,012 were suspected measles deaths and 102 were confirmed cases.

Dhaka division has reported the highest number of measles cases and deaths, followed by Rajshahi, Chattogram, Khulna, Barishal, Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions.
