DHAKA: Former lawmaker and Jamaat leader Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman threw away a helmet provided by police after saying, “I’m not an Awami Leaguer,” while being taken from a prison van to court premises on Saturday (October 3).
Akhtaruzzaman expressed anger at being handcuffed and made to wear a helmet. “In the country I fought to liberate, I have been handcuffed and made to wear a helmet,” he said.
While being taken to court, he said he had spoken out about mismanagement at Biman. At one point, he was also seen pointing a finger at police and warning them from inside the prison van before throwing away the helmet.
“Oppression and persecution cannot stop us. Jamaat will fight for the people and for establishing their rights,” he said.
He added, “Brothers, the struggle for people’s rights will continue. The people’s struggle will continue. We will fight for the people, Inshallah.”
Last Thursday morning, there was a delay in distributing Zamzam water to Umrah pilgrims arriving from Medina on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight. Akhtaruzzaman was among the passengers. After arriving at the Dhaka airport, he allegedly behaved aggressively towards airport officials over the incident and made objectionable remarks, including referring to the aviation minister by name.
A video showing his confrontation subsequently circulated on social media.
In the video, Akhtaruzzaman is heard telling airport Executive Director Group Captain SM Ragib Samad, “I’ll grab you by the neck and throw you out,” while accusing airport officials of failing to perform their duties. The executive director, however, was seen attempting to handle the situation calmly.
